The Motivation Blueprint: Designing Work That Fuels Energy, Growth, and Commitment (29 Sep 2026)

This is Part 1 of the 3-part Learning That Sticks Fall Series. All sessions are moderated by Nancy Bacon of the Nonprofit Learning Center.

What helps people feel motivated, energized, engaged, and committed at work—and what makes them feel like they’re just going through the motions? How do we motivate people when they’re feeling disengaged, depleted, or resistant to change?

Grounded in Self-Determination Theory and drawing on Matthew Richter’s new book,The Motivation Blueprint, Tineke Melkebeek brings both the research and her own expertise in human motivation to this practical conversation about designing work that helps people thrive.

We’ll explore the everyday moments where motivation is won or lost — how goals get set, how feedback lands, how performance conversations go, and how expectations get communicated. Tineke will show how these moments can support or undermine three needs at the core of intrinsic motivation: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

You’ll leave with practical ideas and tools you can put to use right away to create workplace conditions where people don’t just comply, but genuinely want to contribute.

Tineke Melkebeek, PhD, is a human capital expert whose work is grounded in Self-Determination Theory. She explores how organizations can support human flourishing by combining evidence-based HR and learning practices with a deep understanding of motivation, well-being, and ethical workplace design.

In November’s general election, Wyoming voters will vote on a statewide ballot initiative that would create a homeowner’s primary residence property tax exemption. The Wyoming Nonprofit Network believes it is critical that nonprofit professionals and board members understand the impact of property tax revenue on the sector.

About the Presenter:

Hank Hoversland was appointed Executive Director of the Wyoming Taxpayers Association in November 2024. Prior to leading the Association, Hoversland served as a fiscal analyst for the Wyoming Legislative Service Office, which is the permanent, non-partisan staff for the Wyoming Legislature. He also interned for the United States Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources under the leadership of Wyoming’s senior United States Senator, John Barrasso.

A Casper native, who now calls Cheyenne home, Hank earned bachelor’s degrees in economics and political science from the University of Wyoming in 2022. He also earned his Executive MBA from UW in July 2026 with a concentration in energy.

Wyoming Parent Information Center, is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1990 by Terri Dawson in collaboration with parents, educators, and professionals serving families across the state of Wyoming. WPIC is governed by a board of directors, the majority of which are parents or family members of children with disabilities. WPIC has been the federally-funded Parent Training and Information Center (PTI) since 1991. PTIs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs to help families with special education needs

Boardroom Basics: What Every Nonprofit Board Member Should Know (13 Oct 2026)

As an adapted version of the organization’s in-person Board Fundamentals Workshop, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network is excited to again be offering Boardroom Basics: What Every Nonprofit Board Member Should Know. This two-hour online workshop will discuss the primary functions of the board of directors, including responsibilities and legal obligations. In addition to the information delivered online, attendees will receive a 15-page digital handout with workshop content and links to relevant resources. Recognizing the impact of strengthened governance within the nonprofit sector, this learning opportunity utilizes an organizational registration, meaning a single registration provides access to a Zoom link that can be shared with all board members and staff for no additional charge.

To support the onboarding of new board members and provide continued education for existing board members throughout the year, Boardroom Basics will be offered bimonthly in 2026.

Offered Dates:

The two-hour online workshop will be offered every other month in 2026. The same content will be shared each month, with workshop attendees able to attend the session that best fits their schedule.

Advocacy Workshop:

Legislative policy has a profound impact on our way of life in Wyoming. To help shape the future of our state, nonprofits must have a clear understanding of how to effectively advocate for the causes they espouse and the populations they serve. In partnership with the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network is pleased to offer Introduction to Advocacy, an in-person learning event in Teton County. The goal of this training is to teach local nonprofits how to craft compelling messages that educate and resonate with decision-makers at all levels of government.

Workshop participants will:

Learn the difference between advocacy and lobbying and what activities are allowable for 501(c)3 organizations

Receive guidance on how to educate Boards about the importance of advocacy

Gain clarity on how messaging differs for organizations that receive direct government funding versus those that do not

Explore a messaging framework grounded in core Wyoming values

Develop messaging aligned with their organization’s specific mission and impact

Practice messaging in a peer-learning environment

Be introduced to the role of coalition building in establishing a collective voice that is heard and valued in Cheyenne

Develop an action plan to support their organization’s advocacy efforts with local elected officials and in advance of the 2027 General Session of the Wyoming Legislature

To extend the learning from the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to directly engage with local elected officials in a panel discussion and a networking lunch from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Confirmed panelists, listed below, are not currently running for re-election or are running uncontested.

Coalitions allow organizations to combine resources, expertise, and influence to address complex problems, often serving as a bridge between individual nonprofit advocacy and systems of change.

This facilitated discussion will help established coalitions strengthen their collective efforts, both locally and statewide. Participating coalitions will be grounded in a definition of an effective coalition and guided through a series of reflective questions to identify where the group has been successful and where opportunities exist to increase impact.

Who should attend? Established coalitions that have been working collaboratively for at least 1 year, have identified priorities and strategic goals and have previously engaged decision makers on coalition priorities.

Registration Structure: Space is limited. One registration per coalition, with limit of 7 participants per coalition). There is no additional fee to register, with attendance of Introduction to Advocacy and Elected Officials Panel encouraged but not required to participate in the facilitated discussion.

Michael Pearlman serves as the Wyoming Nonprofit Network’s Director of External Affairs, where he leads the Network’s public policy and outreach efforts, serving as an advocate and a voice for Wyoming nonprofits. He previously spent six years immersed in Wyoming state government policy as Communications Director for Governor Mark Gordon. A former Teton County resident, Michael’s professional background includes more than a decade of experience in journalism, communications and public relations in both the private and nonprofit sectors.

Tess Mittelstadt serves as the Wyoming Nonprofit Network’s Director of Learning and Development, where she supports nonprofit organizations statewide through educational opportunities and helps organizations in Natrona County reach their full potential through one-on-one consulting. With a master’s in public administration with a nonprofit focus from the University of Wyoming, and having served as an executive director, director of development, and board member, Tess brings broad experience in nonprofit leadership, community engagement, fundraising, and governance.

Tell, Show, Skip: What's Missing from How We Train (27 Oct 2026)

We tend to assume people need to be convinced first—that if we provide the right information, they'll change what they do. But the evidence points the other way: practice changes first, and belief follows once people see the new way working. If we want people to do their work differently, training has to help them practice differently first, and not just hear about it or watch it demonstrated.

That's where deliberate practice comes in: activities designed specifically to sharpen one part of a skill, with real and timely feedback, working just past what someone can already do comfortably. It's not just "more practice" - it's intentional and effortful, and meant to push us past our comfort zone. It's also largely absent from training, often because we assume there's no time or right setting for it.

This session looks at what deliberate practice is, what it requires, why it's harder to build into training than it sounds, and what it makes possible when you do.

Nidhi Sachdeva is a teacher educator, researcher, and learning design expert specializing in the science of learning, teacher expertise, and evidence-informed instructional design. She teaches at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto and is Professor at Academica University of Applied Sciences in Amsterdam, where she supports projects focused on developing teacher expertise. She is Chair of researchED Canada, Principal Consultant at Microlearning Consulting, and co-author, with Paul A. Kirschner, of the forthcoming Becoming an Expert Teacher: Deliberate Practice for Effective Teaching. Her work focuses on translating cognitive science into practical approaches that help educators and learning professionals design instruction that builds durable learning, skilled performance, and professional expertise.

Every Shift Counts: Strategies to make sure nonprofit deskless workers can learn and serve (17 Nov 2026)

"Frontline" and "deskless" aren't just retail or warehouse terms — they describe a huge share of the nonprofit workforce too. Shelter staff providing services to homeless youth, home health aides moving house to house, food bank volunteers coordinating a Tuesday-morning distribution, community health workers going door to door, disaster relief responders deployed with a few hours' notice, hospice caregivers, meal-delivery coordinators– we could go on and on. These are the people carrying out your organization's mission in real time, often with the least structured support and the least time to sit through a training.

JD Dillon has spent his career closing the gap between how frontline and deskless teams are asked to perform and how they're actually equipped to succeed. In this session, JD draws on his new book, The Frontline Enablement Playbook, to show what it takes to support the people doing this work: building guidance that fits into the pace of shelter, field, and direct-service work instead of pulling people away from it; growing supervisor capability without adding another layer of administration; creating connection across shifts, sites, and volunteer schedules; and making the internal case for why frontline and deskless support deserves real investment, not an afterthought.

Expect practical, adaptable ideas for equipping the people closest to the people you serve — whatever "frontline" looks like in your organization.
