Enhancing Fund Development and Strengthening Supporter Engagement Through Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Each month, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network highlights a specific topic impacting the nonprofit sector in its What We Are Learning email series. In June 2025, WNN is learning about peer-to-peer fundraising and its potential to diversify an organization's fund development strategy.

Start Thinking About Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

For nonprofit organizations, peer-to-peer fundraising empowers supporters to fundraise on its behalf, building trust and increasing awareness of the mission through personal connections. Consider the pre-learning questions below related to peer-to-peer fundraising:

1. Does the organization understand the difference between peer-to-peer fundraising, crowdfunding, and online giving?

2. Has the organization developed the necessary messaging and marketing tools to support community members' fundraising efforts through peer-to-peer campaigns?

3. Does the organization’s current fundraising platform have a peer-to-peer function? If not, does the organization have the budget needed to upgrade its platform or explore an alternative platform?

WyoGives and Peer-to-Peer Fundraising

Using the peer-to-peer feature available through the platform, organizations participating in WyoGives on July 16, 2025, can amplify their efforts and increase awareness for the statewide day of giving.

Once an organization has finalized its WyoGives online fundraising page, supporters can create individual fundraising pages to encourage those within their network to donate, with all donations going directly to the organization. Benefits of incorporating peer-to-peer fundraising into your organization's WyoGives campaign include:

  • Increased Reach and Awareness: Leverages supporters' networks to reach new donors.
  • Enhanced Donor Engagement: Offers a more in-depth and active way for supporters to participate.
  • Boosted Fundraising Potential: Multiplies the impact of individual donations and can lead to increased revenue.
  • Acquisition of New Donors: Exposes the organization to previously untapped audiences.

Resources

  • Selecting the right individuals to recruit as peer-to-peer fundraisers is crucial for the organization’s success. According to OneCause, the ideal candidates to support peer-to-peer campaigns are already engaged with the organization, have themselves made a financial contribution of any amount, have connections within the community, and have a social media presence. Read more peer-to-peer best practices from OneCause online.
  • Whether it be through thermometers to track total donations raised by each participating fundraiser, shared fundraising commitments to support fundraisers in reaching their personal goals, or badges to mark certain milestones, the organization should have a plan to celebrate peer-to-peer participants.
