Understanding Property Taxes and Their Impact on Wyoming Communities

Each month, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network highlights a specific topic impacting the nonprofit sector in its What We Are Learning email series. In October 2026, WNN is learning about property taxes and how property tax revenue impacts community services.

Start Thinking About Property Taxes

Many people pay property taxes without knowing how the revenue affects their community. To start thinking about property taxes and the revenue they generate, consider the following questions:

1. Do you know what types of property are subject to property taxes?

2. Do you know how property taxes are determined and reassessed?

3. Specific to your county and local government, do you know what public services depend on property tax revenue?

Learning with the Wyoming Taxpayers Association

In November’s general election, Wyoming voters will vote on a statewide ballot initiative that would create a homeowner’s primary residence property tax exemption. To ensure nonprofit professionals and board members are informed, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network hosted a virtual discussion with Wyoming Taxpayers Association Executive Director Hank Hoversland to explain what property taxes fund and what a decrease in property tax revenue could mean for Wyoming communities.

The Wyoming Nonprofit Network's Opposition to Proposition 1

With the unanimous support of its board of directors, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network has announced its opposition to Wyoming Initiative 1, the Homeowners Primary Residence Property Tax Exemption Measure. If passed, this citizen-initiated ballot measure would exempt 50% of the assessed value of a primary residential property from property taxation.
