Understanding Time Management and Available Tools

Each month, the Wyoming Nonprofit Network highlights a specific topic impacting the nonprofit sector in its What We Are Learning email series. In August 2026, WNN is learning about time management and the factors that impact nonprofit professionals' ability to manage their time.

Start Thinking About Time Management

Time management allows nonprofit professionals to use one of their most limited resources intentionally. To start thinking about time management, the following self-reflection questions should be considered:

1. When during the day are you most productive?

2. Do you tend to procrastinate on certain types of tasks?

3. How do you decide which tasks need immediate attention compared to tasks that can be done later?

4. Are there specific distractions or activities that prevent you from being productive?

5. Are you comfortable with the balance you currently have between professional responsibilities and personal time?

    Burnout and Time Management

For any professional, burnout must be understood before time management can be discussed.

Cait Donovan, burnout expert, podcaster, and keynote speaker at the 2025 Wyoming Nonprofit Conference, explains that feeling “foggy, reactive, exhausted, or emotionally flat” is not a motivation problem, but “it is your nervous system doing exactly what it was designed to do under prolonged stress.”

“You did not lose your skills. Your brain is simply prioritizing survival over strategy. This is why advice like “set better goals,” “be more grateful,” or “manage your time better” often feels insulting when you are burned out. Those strategies rely on parts of the brain that are currently under-resourced.”

As Donovan explains, burnout recovery starts with rhythm and predictability. The simple practice of eating at regular times, going to bed at a similar time each night, and avoiding doomscrolling can be the start of your brain regrowing.
